Large 19th Century Oil on Canvas English Pointer

Stock Number: 3166

Striking large scale oil on canvas of an English Pointer appearing to hold down a point, rather than on point, his nose is up picking scent but resting on his haunches. Regarded as one of the finest hunting breeds, bred to "point" prey rather than retrieve, taking its name from the pose it adopts when detecting the scent of game, which in turn alerts the guns as to the location and presence of prey. His sensitive nose, big stylish movements and flashy pointing stance make him a fine companion on the Grouse Moor. Oil on Canvas, Circa 1880. Unmounted, Good condition, Some restorations.
