Early Maiolica Albarello

Early Maiolica tin glazed earthernware albarello or pharmacy jar, Painted in blue and yellow, apart from bands around the mouth and base the entire is decorated on blue ground with formal daisy like flowers on stems with tendrils springing from an urn. Above this is the inscription Lo CH D PiNo referring to the original contents stored within which would have been pine nuts. The constriction just underneath the mouth was used to close the pot off with a piece of parchment or paper and string. Provenance: Private Paris collection since 1984. Similar designed jar most likely from the same collection is found in the V & A Museum, London (Accession Number) 383-1889 Florentine, Italy, Circa 1590.
