Early 19th Century Carved Wooden Glove Makers Trade Sign
Stock Number: 3622Glove Makers Trade Sign. Carved wood with the original gilded finish, weathered with lots of bole showing through the gilding. Original iron fitting to the reverse on the top of the wrist. A later iron fitting has also been added most likely in the early 20th Century to enable the sign to be hung with the fingers pointing downwards. The tip of the thumb has been restored, again likely to be a early 20th century restoration. Some evidence of historical worm to the thumb. "The Glove is, in France the common sign of Glove Makers: generally it is a colossal representation of a glove..... This article of dress has had more honour conferred upon it than any other" Larwood and Hotten 1898 "The Sign of the Golden Glove is still a familiar one in many parts of the country. These huge gloves leave no doubt about the trade they symbolise, and in the 17th Century they were one of the most common signs in any Town" Meadows 1957 Both if these articles refer to metal signs rather than examples such as this found in carved wood.
