18th Century Heraldic Crest of Prince August of Saxe-Gotha - Altenburg. (b.1747 - d.1806) August was the youngest child of Frederick III, well educated in literature and sciences, although a planned military career was abandoned in 1769. After travelling to the Netherlands and the UK. August took a Grand Tour to Italy from 1771 - 1777, engaging with Voltaire in Geneva. Considered as an open minded, progressive and enlightened Prince, he was one of the most significant translators of French Literature. Oil on Heavy Panel. Circa 1764
