Large Grand Tour Bronze of Narcissus

Stock Number: 4509

Bronze Figure of Narcissus Italy, late 19th century After the Antique Cast in bronze with a rich light verdigris patina, this finely modeled figure represents Narcissus, the beautiful youth of Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection. Standing in a relaxed contrapposto pose, the youth gazes downward, his expression serene and introspective. The elegant proportions, idealized features, and sensuous modeling of the body recall the celebrated Roman marble found at Pompeii, now in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples. Such bronzes were highly prized souvenirs of the Grand Tour-journeys undertaken by educated Europeans in the 18th and 19th centuries to study the art and antiquities of classical civilization. This example reflects both the technical excellence of Italian foundries and the enduring fascination with ancient ideals of beauty and contemplation.
