Early 20th Century Motor Racing Painting by Robert de la Riviére (1909-1992)

Stock Number: 4738

Robert de la Riviére (1909-1992) "Rob Roy" was a French painter, illustrator and motor enthusiast. He became particularly well known for his depictions of vintage and Grand Prix automobiles. His work documented cars and races from the Golden Era of motor sport of 1930 onwards, including Le Mans and the great European circuits. The loose and energetic handling of the picture became his hallmark, very rapid impressionistic brushwork, maintaining a strong emphasis of the mechanical forms and wheels, his cars often depicted from an unusual elevated angle, and observed in a racing moment as opposed to a formal portrait, the viewer feels the car may suddenly whizz off the painting and onwards to the chequered flag.
