Pair of Large Portuguese Coimbra-Style Faïence Vases
Stock Number: 4764A striking pair of exceptionally large Portuguese faïence vases, each decorated in a bold cobalt-blue palette on a white ground. The generously proportioned baluster forms are covered with lively hand-painted scenes of birds, deer and other animals amongst stylised trees, flowering plants and scrolling foliage. The expressive brushwork and deliberately naïve treatment give the decoration considerable charm, while the broad unglazed bands to the bases and painted necks add to their character. The decoration closely relates to the traditional Coimbra faïence tradition, which is particularly noted for blue-and-white painted naturalistic and hunting motifs. Portugal, Circa 1950. Condition commensurate with age, minor blemishes and glaze loss. one slightly faded.
