Large Desvres Delft Polychrome Ribbed Covered Jar
Stock Number: 4812A large Desvres polychrome Delft covered vase, with a rounded ribbed body and domed cover surmounted by a green Lion finial, one paw resting on a ball. Decorative panels depict birds among flowers and foliage, framed by intricate scrolling borders and alternating bands of ornament. Blue, green and iron-red decoration contrasts with the pale ground, extending across the shoulders, cover and foot. Its generous scale gives the vase a substantial decorative presence, while the arrangement of panels emphasises the curved form. The expressive animal finial provides a sculptural finishing detail, complementing the densely patterned surface and varied colours of the decoration. France, Circa 1890.
